Looff carousel horse, stander

$7500

This is an early Charles I.D. Looff carousel horse carved around 1885, featuring the classic pug-nose head profile and a peek-a-boo mane, a carving style characteristic of Looff's Brooklyn shop period. The horse is a full-size second-row stander with proportions consistent with documented Looff examples from the 1880s.

  • Height: 58.5 in. (to ear tip)
  • Length: 58 in. (nose to tail)
  • Width: 11 in.
  • Approximate weight: ~100 lbs.

The horse is finished in a later restoration paint by Charlie Jakubowski, known for historically respectful carousel repainting. Purchased in 1988 from James Aten, Antique Figures Carousel in Oregon City, OR.

Currently it resides in San Diego, CA.
