And do you have enough money for everything?<\/p>\n<p>Like most everything in life, it is good to go in with a game plan.\u00a0 Baby gear shopping is the same.\u00a0 For some people, that means consulting a friend, relative, or parent.\u00a0 For others, that may mean doing your own research ahead of time and hoping for the best (we guess you are the latter or you might not be reading this).<\/p>\n<p>First we would like to say\u2026don\u2019t freak out.\u00a0 Your baby will surely have everything they need when they enter the world.<\/p>\n<p>When looking at baby products for the first time, there are a few things we suggest.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sign up with the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) to receive updates on all recalled items.<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to some items, you get what you pay for (like car seats and strollers).<\/li>\n<li>Realize that not all strollers are created equally.\u00a0 You will likely need more than one since they all have different uses.<\/li>\n<li>You really don\u2019t need one of everything in the store. Sometimes must-haves are sometimes just-wants, not needs.<\/li>\n<li>Watch out for gimmicks.\u00a0 Not all pretty things are useful.<\/li>\n<li>Get a diaper bag you like and would carry even if you didn\u2019t have to have all kinds of baby stuff inside.<\/li>\n<li>If you are unsure of some items, buy them in stages.\u00a0 For instance, you don\u2019t need a highchair before giving birth.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to return items.\u00a0 Be sure to check the store\u2019s return policy before you buy.<\/li>\n<li>Hand-me-downs are OK for the most part, but be picky.\u00a0 We, as well as the CPSC, recommend not buying a used car seat.<\/li>\n<li>Read online reviews, but be wary.\u00a0 Some review sites are more promotional than factual.\u00a0 Not all review sites test their products thoroughly.<\/li>\n<li>Consider enlisting help to choose baby items.\u00a0 This could be a family member, friend, baby planner, or sales assistant.\u00a0 Make sure whomever you choose, they have YOUR best interest in mind and not their own.\u00a0 What may have worked for them may not work for you.<\/li>\n<li>Test items in the store before you buy.\u00a0 Most shops are pretty good about letting you take things for an in-store test drive.<\/li>\n<li>Realize you may need to compromise on some items, but we suggest not compromising on strollers, car seats, sleep items, and baby carriers.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget about yourself\u2026moms need stuff too!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Initial baby costs can be overwhelming.\u00a0 Furniture, gear, clothing, lotions, lubes, diapers\u2026ahhhhh!\u00a0 We know.\u00a0 We have been there.\u00a0 Trust us, it all works out.\u00a0 No baby ever cried all night because of hand me down clothes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Amber Maxwell and Ilana Johnson are the founders of <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/petiteconsumer.com\/\">Petite Consumer<\/a><em>, an online juvenile product review site. \u00a0They are two moms who have a passion for parenting products. \u00a0The Petite Consumer takes an unbiased look at products using methodology and independent testing.
