{"id":1444,"date":"2012-12-13T19:00:54","date_gmt":"2012-12-14T00:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carouselandrockinghorses.com\/blog\/?p=1444"},"modified":"2014-03-28T11:22:20","modified_gmt":"2014-03-28T15:22:20","slug":"tips-to-help-your-child-overcome-the-fear-of-santa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carouselandrockinghorses.com\/blog\/tips-to-help-your-child-overcome-the-fear-of-santa\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips to Help Your Child Overcome the Fear of Santa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Christmas sure is a magical time and for those who<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1445\" title=\"santa-claus\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carouselandrockinghorses.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/santa-claus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carouselandrockinghorses.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/santa-claus.jpg 226w, https:\/\/www.carouselandrockinghorses.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/santa-claus-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/> celebrate it; it is also a time full of traditions and expectations<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Most parents want to make that Christmas magic happen for their kids, which often means they want that adorable picture of their child beaming on Santa\u2019s knee.\u00a0 Once children understand that this jolly fellow in the red suit is bringing presents, the excitement builds.\u00a0 Everyone in the family is eager to visit Santa\u2026 but after waiting and waiting in the line, the magic turns into a meltdown for your little one, often resulting in a fear of Santa.<\/p>\n<p>When you have a row of other parents behind you, Santa\u2019s elves ahead looking impatient and the weight of your own expectations bearing down on you, your child\u2019s fear of Santa seems like a big, embarrassing disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s some consolation for parents who can relate to such a situation \u2013 You are not alone because fear of Santa is pretty common.<\/p>\n<p>The first and the most important thing to do in such a case is to keep your cool.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get flustered or impatient, and don\u2019t insist that your child sit on Santa\u2019s knee or go near him.\u00a0 Let the kid behind you go ahead so your child can watch.\u00a0 If your child is still afraid, just leave.\u00a0 You can go for a little walk and try again if your child wants to.\u00a0 You can come back another day if your child wants to.\u00a0 Or you can let it go for this year.\u00a0 Reassure your child that Santa meets lots of kids who feel too scared or shy to sit on his knee, and he understands.\u00a0 He\u2019ll deliver the goods anyway.<\/p>\n<h2>Pre-Santa Prep<\/h2>\n<p>If you suspect your child has a fear of Santa, you can take some steps to make it a little more comfortable and confident on the big day.\u00a0 Try using the three P method to help your child enjoy overcome a fear of Santa, but remember the main thing is not to make it a big deal or pressure your child.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Pictures.<\/strong>\u00a0 Give your child a chance to look at lots and lots of pictures of Santa for a couple of weeks ahead of Christmas, so the child becomes familiar with his face.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Practice.<\/strong>\u00a0 Let your child rehearse with you playing Santa.\u00a0 Enter the room ho ho ho-ing and invite your child sit on your lap.\u00a0 (Remember to keep it playful, no pressure!)<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Participate.<\/strong>\u00a0 If your child really wants to go up but is held back by that fear of Santa, offer to go up with him\/her or go instead.\u00a0 You can bring your child\u2019s letter to Santa while he or she hangs back with another trusted adult.\u00a0 Seeing you chat happily with Santa might reassure your child.<\/p>\n<p>There is one last P, and it is a big <em>don\u2019t<\/em>.\u00a0 Do not pressure your child.\u00a0 Let it be your child\u2019s decision whether or not to approach Santa or sit on his knee.\u00a0 Simply darting up and handing him a letter might be very brave for your child.\u00a0 Whatever happens, reassure your child that Santa will still come, as he or she is a wonderful child.<\/p>\n<p><em>Aishwarya Vohra is a part-time writer and a full-time home maker.
